The conventional painting technique on a vertical canvas was challenged when Pollock decided to lay a canvas on the floor and step inside it. I investigated musical stage as a canvas that can be challenged within different urban pockets. An explorative process of analyzing and observing the possible ways of interaction between audience and performers within public and domestic domains helped me redefine the common understanding of how a stage can be perceived and can perform.
Working with both traditional and nontraditional media, I tried to investigate the underlying potentials existing in different domestic and urban conditions in Umeå. The outcome of these practices is a set of different transportable structures to collect and utilize donated pianos in Umeå, responding to different urban pockets. The proposal tries to argue that sound as a medium carries a rich set of meanings in staking a claim to public space, as the process of sound accruing meaning is in itself a spatialized process.
